La Souterraine eut plusieurs enceintes successives, élevées au 13e siècle et surhaussées au 15e. La première enceinte date du 12e siècle. Elle fut édifiée par l'abbé de Saint-Martial qui y possédait un monastère. Elle fut rasée en 1207 par Hugues IX de Lusignan, comte de la Marche. Une seconde enceinte fut élevée au 13e siècle, Raimond de Gaucelme, abbé de Saint-Martial, ayant rétabli sur la ville l'autorité du monastère en 1226. Les vestiges feraient partie du tracé du 13e siècle. Ils forment actuellement un mur de terrasse entre deux niveaux de jardin. Deux portes sont conservées : la porte Saint-Jean et la porte de Puy-Charraud 14e siècle ?). Cette dernière, construite en granit, se compose d'un passage à rez-de-chaussée entre deux piédroits dont l'un contient un escalier en colimaçon accédant à un ancien corps de garde. Le passage est voûté en berceau surbaissé et se fermait par une porte à cintre brisé garnie d'une herse.

History
La Souterraine had several successive enclosures, raised in the 13th century and heightened in the 15th. The first enclosure dates from the 12th century. It was built by the abbot of Saint-Martial who possessed a monastery there. It was razed in 1207 by Hugues IX of Lusignan, count of the Marche. A second enclosure was raised in the 13th century, Raimond de Gaucelme, abbot of Saint-Martial, having restored the authority of the monastery over the town in 1226. The remains would form part of the layout of the 13th century. They currently form a terrace wall between two levels of garden. Two doors are preserved: the Porte Saint-Jean and the Porte de Puy-Charraud (14th century?). The latter, built of granite, consists of a passage at ground level between two jambs, one of which contains a spiral staircase leading to an old guardhouse. The passage is vaulted with a depressed barrel vault and was closed by a door with a pointed arch fitted with a portcullis.
