The church was under the patronage of the abbey of Moutier d'Ahun. This building doubtless replaced an older church towards the end of the 14th century. It comprises a single nave with a straight chevet. The three bays, the last of which forms the choir, are covered with rib vaults with formerets. The ribs and mouldings rest on small columns with facets stopped at 2.50m on corbels with human heads. The polygonal capitals are decorated with elongated leaves, crockets, and inverted fleurs-de-lis. The western portal, with an acute pointed arch profile, has retained only its moulded archivolts, the small columns having disappeared. The capitals forming a frieze turn back onto the walls. A timber bell tower, with sides covered in shingles and a slate spire, rises at the western end. Inside, restoration projects have revealed abundant traces of painted decoration on all the walls and doubtless the vault. The monumental paintings mainly illustrate scenes from the New Testament, drawn from episodes of the life of the Virgin and the Passion of Christ. This last theme is present everywhere: in the nave and in the choir. The images of Barbara, Catherine, Margaret, Sebastian, Christopher, Anthony and Stephen belong to the usual saints' calendar evoked at the end of the Middle Ages. To these protective and miracle-working saints are added the apostles Peter, James the Major and Bartholomew. Saint John the Baptist occupies a large place with three scenes. Leonard, a saint much sought after in Limousin, is present, whereas Saint Sulpice, patron of the parish, does not appear (GRPM sources). Complete description of the iconography of the restored monumental paintings in the collective publication by Christian Davy, Ilona Hans-Collas and Christine Leduc-Gueye - members of the Group for Research on Mural Painting (GRPM) - published in 2023: "The wall paintings of the church of Saint-Sulpice de Banize".
