Historique

History
After the struggles endured until the end of the 16th century, the inhabitants of the island had a large number of churches built, all following the same model, and adorned with rich decoration of Italian Renaissance inspiration. Cathedral of the bishopric of Aléria until the Revolution, the church of Cervione is said to have been built in 1579. The plan consists of a nave of three bays, the middle one being smaller; of chapels raised between the buttresses of the nave; of a transept and a choir ending in a circular apse. An isolated bell tower rises above the houses. The whole is covered by barrel vaults with transverse arches and penetrations. Pilasters separate each bay and support a classical entablature. In the interior, all the decoration is painted, except that of the capitals of the pilasters, the entablature, the transverse arches and the arcades, in mortar covered with gilding. A dome surmounts the crossing of the transept, composed of two quarter-sphere vaults joined by a barrel vault. It rests on four circular pendentives decorated with painting. On the exterior, it is covered with a dome resting on a drum decorated with pilasters. The dome is crowned by a small campanile whose round arches rest on columns. The covering of the dome reproduces the system of coverings of Genoese buildings of the same period. The circular slates are arranged along the generators of the dome, their dimensions varying and decreasing gradually as they approach the campanile.
