Le fanum de Fréteval est un élément caractéristique d'ensemble monumental gallo-romain, exclusivement présent dans les trois Gaules. Il est le seul encore en élévation, et peut-être le seul du nord de la Gaule dont la voûte de briques demeure toujours en place. Sa construction représente un bon exemple d'architecture gallo-romaine adaptée aux ressources du site, associant des lits de silex liés au mortier avec des arases de briques. History
The fanum of Fréteval is a characteristic element of a Gallo-Roman monumental complex, exclusively present in the three Gauls. It is the only one still in elevation, and perhaps the only one in northern Gaul whose brick vault still remains in place. Its construction represents a good example of Gallo-Roman architecture adapted to the resources of the site, combining beds of flint bonded with mortar with brick arases. Excavations conducted in the sixties revealed a thermal complex and a series of structures of undetermined function. In 1987, the trace of a theatre is said to have been identified. These elements allow two hypotheses to be advanced on the nature of the site. Either the fanum is linked to an important villa of which only the thermal part has been uncovered; or it is a conciliabulum, the more plausible hypothesis because of the size of the cella.
