History
The fortifications comprise the enclosure of the château, and the enclosure of the town which attaches to it to the north and south. Taken as a whole, they date from the 13th century. However, the enclosure of the abbey of Saint-Lomer was added in the 14th century, and that of the convent of the Cordeliers in the 15th century. The eastern part and that which borders the Loire were demolished in the 18th century, during the construction of the bishop's residence and the quays. Most of the gates were destroyed at the time of the Revolution. Most of the towers are still provided with arrow-slits or other defensive works.
