Historique

History
The abbey of Bourgmoyen, founded probably in the Merovingian period, was restored at the end of the 10th century by the count of Blois. Its church was rebuilt in the 12th century, altered at various periods and destroyed at the Revolution. The crypt was found after the 1942 bombardments, beneath the site of the old gymnasium of the college, destroyed by the fire of 1940, which occupied the place of the church. The crypt presents a rectangular plan ending in a flat chevet. It is divided into two aisles with depressed barrel vaults. Lighting was provided by narrow windows. An altar mass, stone benches, a basin added later were found in one of the aisles. The characteristics of the cutting, the masonry with honeycomb-facing, the coverings of ashlar stones with broad joints and insertions of tiles, confirm well the date near the year one thousand given by the texts.
