History
The town which extended to the west, at the foot of the château, was defended by an enclosure flanked by towers and pierced by four gates of which only two survive. The Poitevine Gate was the most southerly and was already mentioned in 1293 and was thus older than the town enclosure which dates from the 15th century. Of the gate the dressed jambs remain. The cylindrical tower which neighbours it to the west is the most southerly of the towers which flanked the town enclosure. It is pierced by loopholes. The crowning of the tower has disappeared.
