Historique
Le château de la Guerche est construit sur la rive tourangelle de la Creuse, à un carrefour de voies de communication. Le castrum, attesté en 1095, dépendait de l'ancienne baronnie de Preuilly. Il en subsiste peu de traces. Le château des Villequier a du être construit entre 1450 (châtelet d'entrée) et 1500 (aile nord). L'aile est, disparue, devait être à peu près contemporaine. Deux ailes subsistent de l'ensemble originel. Elles sont bâties en équerre autour d'une cour carrée d'environ 40 mètres de côté. L'aile sud (châtelet d'entrée et corps de logis d'Aumont) est tourné vers le débouché du pont sur le village. L'aile ouest (corps de logis Villequier, reposant sur deux niveaux superposés de casemates) fonde ses 30 mètres d'élévation dans le lit même de la rivière. Une troisième aile (portique ?) au nord donnait sur les jardins du château. Le quatrième côté était vraisemblablement fermé, par un mur ou par des communs. En partie détruit en 1794, le château fut restauré à partir de 1829 par Raoul de Croy (dont descendent les Crouy-Chanel) et par ses descendants. The castle of la Guerche is built on the Touraine bank of the Creuse, at a crossroads of communication routes. The castrum, attested in 1095, depended on the former barony of Preuilly. Little trace of it remains. The castle of the Villequier must have been built between 1450 (entrance gatehouse) and 1500 (north wing). The east wing, now disappeared, must have been roughly contemporary. Two wings remain of the original ensemble. They are built in a square around a square courtyard of approximately 40 metres on each side. The south wing (entrance gatehouse and main dwelling of Aumont) is turned towards the outlet of the bridge to the village.
