Historique

History
Château de Crissay is a complex construction resulting from several close campaigns of construction and destruction. The present building, in its greater part, was built in the late 15th century. The initial project does not appear to have been fully realized. By its general appearance and décor, the castle presents archaic arrangements that one would be inclined to date higher in the century. The dendrochronological study of 1991 showed that a large part of the samples (ceiling beams of the second floor and roof spaces) had been felled between 1495 and 1496. This building presents arrangements very well preserved in its distribution (great hall having retained part of its original décor and its door fittings, monumental fireplace with architectured décor, ceiling composed of joists laid on the angle to support trapezoidal stone slabs, etc.). This building, which seems never to have been completed, is accompanied by a chapel from the first third of the 16th century, converted into a barn before the Revolution. The outbuildings, adopting an L-shaped plan and modified internally, are probably the old noble house of the 14th century. They were still inhabited after the erection of the new castle if one considers that new décor was applied to the façade in the second half of the 16th century.
