Historique
Le château est un bâtiment rectangulaire du 18e siècle qui s'élève au milieu d'un parc planté. Il est accompagné de communs ou de fermes pouvant également dater du 18e siècle. Les bâtiments actuels ont été construits par monsieur Pearon, seigneur de Serennes, sur les restes d'un ancien castel féodal. Mme Dupin de Francueil, fille naturelle du maréchal de Saxe, achète Nohant après avoir échappé à l'échafaud grâce au 9 Thermidor. Elle abattit les murs qui empêchaient de découvrir l'horizon au sud, fit combler les fossés, planta un bois et créa un potager. Après Aurore de Saxe, le château devient la propriété de George Sand qui y éleva, jusqu'à l'âge de 10 ans, sa petite fille. Une grande partie du décor et du mobilier est due à Aurore de Saxe. Le reste date de l'époque de George Sand. Ce décor n'a pas bougé depuis lors. La chambre où décéda l'écrivain renferme encore les objets personnels. Dans le salon, le piano est celui sur lequel jouèrent Litz et Chopin.

History
The castle is a rectangular 18th-century building that rises in the middle of a planted park. It is accompanied by outbuildings or farms which may also date from the 18th century. The present buildings were constructed by Monsieur Pearon, lord of Serennes, on the remains of an old feudal castle. Mme Dupin de Francueil, natural daughter of the Marshal de Saxe, purchased Nohant after having escaped the scaffold thanks to 9 Thermidor. She demolished the walls that prevented discovering the horizon to the south, had the moats filled, planted a wood and created a vegetable garden. After Aurore de Saxe, the castle became the property of George Sand who raised her granddaughter there until the age of 10. A large part of the decoration and furniture is due to Aurore de Saxe. The rest dates from the time of George Sand. This decoration has not moved since then. The bedroom where the writer died still contains her personal objects. In the salon, the piano is the one on which Liszt and Chopin played.
