Historique

History
The gate of Champagne is almost all that remains of the enclosure walls raised during the second half of the 15th century. The canons of Saint-Sylvain and the inhabitants of Levroux, terrorised by brigands or routiers in the pay of captain Rodriguez, presented their grievances to king Charles VII. The latter, in consideration of Sir Bertrand de la Tour d'Auvergne and the collegiate chapter of Saint-Sylvain which had subscribed to the petition, permitted them, by letters patent of 15 January 1435, to fortify the town. A ditch was dug and the town surrounded by sixteen towers, curtains and a wall-walk. The gate of Champagne was completed in 1506. The round-arched opening of the gate opens between two cylindrical towers pierced with narrow loopholes. At ground level, the towers contain a vaulted casemate. The summit of the towers and the central curtain present wide crenellations. Above the gate, the grooves in which the arms of the drawbridge were set are preserved. A machicolation with seven jets protected the entrance directly.
