La tour de la prison était, au 13e siècle, l'une des six tours de l'enceinte du château seigneurial dénommé Château Raoul. Elle servait de prison à la justice de Châteauroux. Elle fut reconstruite en partie au 15e siècle, ainsi que l'arcade qui subsiste et constituait l'ancienne porte du château vers la ville. Une seconde tour encadrait cette porte, aujourd'hui disparue. Au niveau de la rue, la tour comporte une salle voûtée en coupole et est percée de chambres de tir et meurtrières à mire.

History
The prison tower was, in the 13th century, one of the six towers of the fortification of the seigneurial castle called Château Raoul. It served as a prison for the justice of Châteauroux. It was partly rebuilt in the 15th century, as was the arcade which survives and constituted the former gateway of the castle towards the town. A second tower framed this gateway, today disappeared. At street level, the tower contains a room vaulted in a dome and is pierced with embrasures and loopholes with sights.
