The château de Bouges was built between 1763 and 1770, for Charles Leblanc de Marnaval, farmer of the forges of Clavières, near Ardentes (Indre), and director of the royal cloth manufacture of Châteauroux. Its architect is not identified, although the design of the works has been attributed without proof to Ange-Jacques Gabriel or to a certain Fayeti, whose name is engraved on a balustrade. It bears witness to the major stages in the history of gardens since the end of the 18th century. Of the gardens that accompanied the residence of Charles Leblanc de Marnaval, poorly documented, the overall composition survives, which was organized around a principal axis marked to the east by the château elevated on a terrace surrounded by a balustrade, the court of honour terminated in a hemicycle, the entrance gate and a perspective towards a bridle path drawn in the woods of the estate. The park occupied a vast quadrilateral to the west of the château. A walled vegetable garden was installed to the south of the lower courtyard. Around 1840, Antoine-Achille Masson, comte de Montalivet, had the park laid out. Between 1897 and 1909, the landscape architects Henri and Achille Duchêne recreated, according to a contemporary interpretation, formal gardens near the château and arranged the landscape park for Henri Dufour. Between 1917 and 1967, Mr and Mrs Viguier had various embellishments made to the park and, in the 1950s, they had a flower garden created, on the site of the former vegetable garden. The interest of the gardens lies in the coexistence in perfect harmony of its constituent parts from different periods and styles. They testify to the art of the Duchênes and to a great coherence of creation. The château was bequeathed in 1966 to the Caisse Nationale des Monuments Historiques et des Sites, which became the Centre des Monuments Nationaux.
