Historique

History
Castle built by the lords of Brillac on the site of an old manor. The construction forms a quadrilateral comprised between four unequal towers, and was surrounded by moats now filled. The west tower, or keep, is fitted with machicolations. An old drawbridge, walled up, formed the main access to the great courtyard. Between the keep and the north tower is found a dwelling with galleries of the Louis XII period, richly sculpted. To the north-west and north-east, the galleries are pierced with accoladed arcades with crochets and flourons, and vaulted with groin vaults. On the first floor, the north-west front also possesses a gallery open to the air topped by a floor with fine moulded joists. Several courses of the north tower and all the facings of the interior courtyard are ornamented with sprinklings composed of monograms, initials, fleurs-de-lys and ermines. The south gallery dates from the 18th century. In the angle of the large tower, the oratory retains vestiges of tilework formed of enamelled tiles, reproducing the arms of the castellans of the 15th century.
