Historique
Ce collège fut fondé à l'initiative d'Antoine Barbault, prieur bénédictin de Saint-Marcel, entre 1484 et 1522. Il fut donné en 1573 au duc de Montpensier et aux habitants d'Argenton. Il servit ensuite de prison à partir de 1787 puis fut vendu comme bien national et racheté par la ville en l'an III. L'édifice se compose d'un corps de bâtiment de plan trapézoïdal. Au centre de la façade principale se trouve une tourelle d'escalier dont la porte d'entrée sur rue est ornée de fleurons et pinacles, et porte sur son tympan les armoiries du fondateur. Primitivement, l'ancien collège était entouré d'autres bâtiments, dont la chapelle Saint-Benoît.

History
This college was founded at the initiative of Antoine Barbault, Benedictine prior of Saint-Marcel, between 1484 and 1522. It was given in 1573 to the duke of Montpensier and to the inhabitants of Argenton. It subsequently served as a prison from 1787 and was then sold as national property and repurchased by the city in the year III. The edifice consists of a building with a trapezoidal plan. At the centre of the main façade stands a stair turret whose entrance door on the street is decorated with fleurons and pinnacles, and bears on its tympanum the arms of the founder. Originally, the old college was surrounded by other buildings, including the chapel of Saint-Benoît.
