Le 21 juin 1723, un incendie détruisit plus de mille habitations à Châteaudun. Jules Hardouin, contrôleur des bâtiments, fut chargé de la reconstruction. Il dessina un plan en échiquier avec grande place où se trouvent les bâtiments publics et des maisons régulières. La place forme un rectangle dont le grand côté est pratiquement égal à la diagonale du carré construit sur le petit côté. Elle était entourée de boutiques en arcades. Sur les deux grands côtés devaient s'élever quatre grands bâtiments faisant saillie sur l'alignement, et plus élevés que les maisons voisines. Deux existent sur le fond de la place, l'un étant l'hôtel de ville, construction en pierre de 1777. History
On 21 June 1723, a fire destroyed more than a thousand dwellings in Châteaudun. Jules Hardouin, comptroller of buildings, was tasked with the reconstruction. He drew up a plan in chequerboard pattern with a large square where the public buildings and regular houses are situated. The square forms a rectangle whose long side is practically equal to the diagonal of the square constructed on the short side. It was surrounded by shops in arcades. On the two long sides four large buildings were to be erected projecting beyond the building line, and higher than the neighbouring houses. Two exist at the far end of the square, one being the town hall, a stone construction of 1777. On the other hand, the two large pavilions which were to be built on the other side of the square do not exist and are replaced by a post office building of 1900.
