The construction of the convent of the Cordeliers dates from 1570, the first convent having been destroyed during the siege of the city in 1568 (the chapel was completed in 1576 and the portal in 1572; each jamb has retained a bas-relief and an inscribed panel). These convent buildings, although reworked internally, have retained their volume and their original appearance. The old convent of the Cordeliers was part of the lycée Marceau; it served for a century as a kitchen and refectory for the secondary school students. The lycée was built in 1887 by the architect Alfred Piébourg, in stone from Berchères (Eure-et-Loir). It was originally planned to accommodate 450 secondary school students from the Chartres region. It is characteristic of the school architecture of the Third Republic. It notably features a courtyard of honour different from the other courtyards, the single-storey buildings are bordered by a high gallery with worked ironwork. The building which elegantly terminated the old lycée Marceau, to the south, on the boulevard de la Courtille, first constituted the chapel, the chemistry amphitheatre then the gymnasium of the lycée. The chapel and chemistry amphitheatre became a Natural History Museum in 1968. Since 2003 it has housed the dance and music conservatory of the city of Chartres.
