History

The edifice was erected in the 15th century at the location of an edifice from the 12th century which comprised only a single nave having the surface of the current one. The lateral walls of this first edifice were preserved and pierced with large moulded arcades, in pointed arch, and the exterior buttresses became the pillars separating the nave from the aisles of the new church. The present edifice comprises a nave with aisles, a transept with chapels to the east and a choir terminated by a polygonal apse. In front of the main façade rises a bell tower forming a porch whose lower storey vaulted with ribs dates from the 13th century. The upper storeys were rebuilt in the 15th century. The roof replaced a wooden spire, felled in 1793. In the north-east angle of the north arm of the transept subsists a small chapel from the 12th century, vaulted with ribs. The edifice was formerly entirely covered by vaults with wooden panelling, in broken barrel vault, with visible tie-beams and king-posts. The vaults of the chapels of the choir were demolished and replaced at the end of the 19th century by rib vaults with liernes and pendant keystones, in brick and plaster. Inside there formerly existed a rood screen preceding the choir, between the last piers of the nave. Its location is determined by the staircase enclosed in the south pier. The west wall of the south aisle opens by a door decorated with pinnacles, crockets, fleurons and arcatures. All of it is crowned by a band with foliage and small figures.
