The part of the rampart on each side of the powder tower was included in the extension of the city under Louis VII and Philippe Auguste, these ramparts being constructed between 1180 and 1210. Their poor condition necessitated their rebuilding under Charles VIII, from 1486 to 1497. The powder tower served as an angle tower in this new part of the rampart. Constructed from 1180 to 1210, it was restored several times and served multiple uses, notably for the rope-makers of the rampart of Auron. Under the duke Jean de Berry, it served as a deposit for powders manufactured using paper paste from the mill of Messire Jacques. This use was still its purpose after 1793. The lower storey is vaulted in a half-sphere. The tower is defended by radiating loopholes, tall and narrow. Inside, the arrangement of the embrasures and the cupola affirm the 12th century. Before the reconstruction of 1487, the base of the tower was doubtless polygonal. Above the cupola vault, the powder tower must have comprised a storey covered by a conical roof space.
