Historique

History
In 1769, the first bridge project was proposed to the assembly of the civil diocese of Lavaur. Begun in 1777, the works were completed in 1785 after numerous vicissitudes. The single arch measures nearly 50m span. The upstream and downstream faces, identical, are decorated with archivolt mouldings, interrupted by the voussoir key. The arms of the province were to be sculpted on these keys but there is no trace of any; either they were not executed, or they were scratched or have disappeared. Above the arch, courses in relief outline vast panels at the spandrels. Higher up, a new series of mouldings supports a wide band which, on the outside of the parapets, runs the full length of the structure and joins the mouldings that encircle the round towers. Due to the crumbly nature of the slopes, the abutments received very considerable development. They are symmetrical and are composed of round towers with vertical facing, extended by wider structures with very pronounced slope towards upstream and downstream, and less marked slope towards the middle of the river. The parapets of the bridge continue without change directly above the round towers and the abutments, the two avenues thus forming esplanades. These open spaces were planted with cedars.
