Le monastère cistercien de Candeil, fondé vers le milieu du 12e siècle, ayant complètement disparu, le château de Serres, construit à proximité, demeure l'unique vestige des résidences secondaires des abbés. La construction remonterait aux années 1430-1453 et se serait achevée au milieu du 16e siècle. Après 1514, les abbés n'y résidèrent plus. Cet ancien château, siège d'une exploitation agricole, se composait d'éléments fortifiés, réduits aujourd'hui à deux tours, et d'importantes dépendances. Ces bâtiments ont subi, au cours des siècles et surtout au 19e, d'importants remaniements. La grande tour est une maison forte de plan barlong, élevée de trois étages plus un comble. C'est le type même des maisons de campagne fortifiées et dont la destination était plutôt d'abriter les récoltes ou le produit des dîmes ainsi que le personnel éventuellement. Les caves voûtées avec pilier central sont assez bien conservées, ainsi que l'escalier à vis. Au troisième étage se trouve la chapelle ornée de peintures murales, dont un panneau représente les moines aux pieds de la Vierge. L'ensemble des parois, murs et voûtes, a été recouvert de peintures.

History
The Cistercian monastery of Candeil, founded around the middle of the 12th century, having completely disappeared, the château of Serres, built nearby, remains the only vestige of the secondary residences of the abbots. The construction would date from the years 1430-1453 and was completed in the middle of the 16th century. After 1514, the abbots no longer resided there. This former castle, seat of an agricultural business, was composed of fortified elements, reduced today to two towers, and important outbuildings. On the third storey is found the chapel decorated with wall paintings, of which a panel represents monks at the feet of the Virgin. All of the walls, surfaces and vaults have been covered with paintings.
