History

In the Middle Ages, Tostat was one of the domains of the lord of Bazillac. The old main dwelling was built in the 16th century; a square brick fort surrounded by moats. After the peace established by Henri IV, the Bazillacs settled in Versailles or Paris and the building, abandoned, fell into ruins. In 1760, a marquis of Bazillac had the moat on the East side filled in and built, from 1770 to 1785, a residence château. The Revolution left the interior decoration unfinished. Upon his return, it was completed. The 18th-century château, constructed on a rectangular plan, has preserved at the rear (west side) the "farmyard" of the old main dwelling as well as sections of wall, a watch turret, and is surrounded by moats on three sides. The main façade, in brick, is accessible by a vast esplanade. Brick chainages highlight a central avant-corps topped by a curvilinear pediment with traces of bas-reliefs, as well as two lateral elements standing out at roof level by an independent pyramidal roof. The interior presents abundant decoration (plasterwork and sculptured woodwork) characteristic of the second half of the 18th century.
