History

Identified as the first paper mill in Gascony (late 15th century), the large building of the Cahuzac mill was installed on a pre-existing blade mill site. The edifice, rectangular in plan, constructed on two levels, is built of local rubble stone covered with render. A century later, having become a flour mill again, it possessed three pairs of millstones, a fourth being added apparently after 1826; the latter was transformed in 1912 to power a sawmill adjoining the mill. Stopped in 1943, the mill had a supply canal of nearly 4 km, connected to the Adour. The partial destruction of the dam in 1988 suspended the water supply to a mill that had six watercourses, in which turned at different periods the horizontal wheels, adopted after the abandonment of paper production. On site are preserved three pairs of millstones and several wheels, a beating saw and, on the upper floor, a bolter 5 m long. This restored mill has served as a rural gîte for approximately 25 years.
