Historique
Rieux était autrefois la capitale du pays de Volvestre et le chef-lieu d'une judicature royale. L'église est consacrée en 1222, puis élevée au titre de cathédrale en 1318. Le plan de l'édifice témoigne de remaniements successifs. La partie la plus ancienne est le choeur du 12e siècle. La nef date du 14e siècle (1330) , ainsi que le portail qui s'ouvre sur la travée centrale. Le choeur du chapitre construit sur le flanc nord de la nef, date du début du 17e siècle. La sacristie est du 15e siècle. Le clocher octogonal de cinq étages, qui flanque le pignon ouest de la nef, est un ouvrage du 15e siècle. Vers 1530, est ouverte, dans la dernière chapelle sur l'entrée du clocher, une porte sculptée dans le style de la première Renaissance. History
Rieux was formerly the capital of the country of Volvestre and the seat of a royal court. The church is consecrated in 1222, then raised to the title of cathedral in 1318. The plan of the building bears witness to successive modifications. The oldest part is the 12th-century choir. The nave dates from the 14th century (1330), as does the portal which opens onto the central bay. The chapter-house constructed on the north side of the nave, dates from the early 17th century. The sacristy is from the 15th century. The octagonal five-storey bell tower, which flanks the west gable of the nave, is a work of the 15th century. Around 1530, a sculpted door in the style of the early Renaissance is opened in the last chapel at the entrance to the bell tower. The bishops proceeded from their episcopal palace to the cathedral by this door.
