Château Renaissance construit à partir de 1545 par Jean Imbert d'Ardennes, riche bourgeois de la ville qui tirait sa fortune de l'exploitation des mines de cuivre des environs, et complété en 1553. En 1846, le château est vendu aux missionnaires de l'ordre de Picpus, qui sont expulsés en 1905. L'édifice de plan carré délimite une cour intérieure. L'aile nord, inhabitable, est constituée de trois galeries superposées auxquelles est adossé le portail triomphal à deux baies et ouvertures latérales. Quatre tours rondes cantonnent le château. Les façades sont ornées d'un décor sculpté et superposent des ordres Renaissance. Deux escaliers desservent le château, l'un à vis dans la tour nord-ouest ; l'autre monumental dans l'aile Est, avec colonnes cannelées à chapiteau dorique, ionique et corinthien. Dans la grande salle du rez-de-chaussée, cheminée monumentale avec, au centre de la hotte, un cartouche figurant un personnage nu tenant un fouet et un masque symbolisant la comédie flanqué de cariatides engainées. History
Renaissance castle built from 1545 by Jean Imbert d'Ardennes, a rich burgess of the town who drew his fortune from the exploitation of copper mines in the surrounding area, and completed in 1553. In 1846, the castle is sold to the missionaries of the order of Picpus, who are expelled in 1905. The edifice of square plan delimits an interior courtyard. The north wing, uninhabitable, is constituted of three superposed galleries to which is adjoined the triumphal portal with two bays and lateral openings. Four round towers canton the castle. The facades are ornamented with sculptured decoration and superpose Renaissance orders. Two staircases serve the castle, one spiral in the north-west tower; the other monumental in the east wing, with fluted columns with Doric, Ionic and Corinthian capitals. In the great hall of the ground floor, monumental chimney with, at the centre of the hood, a cartouche representing a naked figure holding a whip and a mask symbolizing comedy flanked by sheathed caryatids. The piers are decorated with sheathed atlantes. Large 19th century buildings flank the castle.
