La Couvertoirade fut une place forte dont la fondation remonte aux Templiers qui, en 1158, avaient été mis en possession du Larzac par Raymond Bérenger, comte de Barcelone et roi d'Aragon. En 1182, la donation au Temple fut confirmée. Après dissolution de l'ordre du Temple, plusieurs biens passèrent aux Hospitaliers en 1312. En 1562, la place résiste à un assaut des Protestants. En 1566, elle est prise par le capitaine huguenot Sausset, et reprise peu après par l'évêque Claude Briconnet de Lodève. Les premiers remparts remontent au 12e siècle. En 1445, elle est reconstruite par les Hospitaliers. Le plan des restes actuels présente une enceinte polygonale percée de deux portes, au nord et au sud. Ces portes sont surmontées chacune d'une tour carrée. Les angles du rempart sont garnis de tours rondes. Un chemin de ronde surmonte le mur d'enceinte.

History
La Couvertoirade was a stronghold whose foundation goes back to the Templars who, in 1158, had been put in possession of Larzac by Raymond Bérenger, Count of Barcelona and King of Aragon. In 1182, the donation to the Temple was confirmed. After dissolution of the order of the Temple, several properties passed to the Hospitallers in 1312. In 1562, the stronghold resisted an assault by Protestants. In 1566, it was taken by the Huguenot captain Sausset, and retaken shortly after by the bishop Claude Briconnet of Lodève. The earliest ramparts date from the 12th century. In 1445, it was rebuilt by the Hospitallers. The plan of the present remains shows a polygonal enclosure pierced by two gates, to the north and south. These gates are each topped by a square tower. The angles of the rampart are furnished with round towers. A wall-walk surmounts the enclosure wall.
