Historique
Eglise fortifiée, en partie enclavée dans une haute muraille rocheuse dominant la vallée du Tarn. Le mur qui la ferme d'un côté, comporte des travaux de défense (meutrières, bretèches). La voûte est constituée par une grotte naturelle. Un écusson chargé d'un animal fantastique, moitié licorne, moitié chèvre, est reproduit deux fois dans la construction et devait être le sceau de la communauté. Peyre était le siège d'un important prieuré. Des inscriptions indiquent des travaux en 1594 et 1609.

History
Fortified church, partly enclosed within a high rocky wall dominating the Tarn valley. The wall that closes it on one side features defensive works (loopholes, bretèches). The vault is formed by a natural cave. An escutcheon charged with a fantastic animal, half unicorn, half goat, is reproduced twice in the construction and must have been the seal of the community. Peyre was the seat of an important priory. Inscriptions indicate works in 1594 and 1609.
