Historique
Incendiée par les grandes compagnies, Mirepoix fut reconstruite à la fin du 14e siècle et entourée d'une enceinte fortifiée en 1372. Le tracé de la ville qui fut adopté, fut celui des bastides et comportait trois portes. La porte d'Avail, la dernière existante, s'ouvre sur le front occidental, les maisons s'étant substituées au mur d'enceinte sans le dépasser. La tour, du type dit "ouvert à la gorge", fait saillie sur cet alignement. La porte était fermée par des vantaux avec herse en avant. Deux archères existent au-dessus et une autre sur chaque face en retour pour protéger la courtine. Les armoiries de la ville, dessinées en 1817 par l'astronome Vidal, ont été incrustées au-dessus de l'ouverture.

History
Burned by the great mercenary companies, Mirepoix was rebuilt at the end of the 14th century and surrounded by a fortified enclosure in 1372. The layout of the city that was adopted was that of the bastides and had three gates. The Porte d'Avail, the last existing one, opens onto the western front, houses having replaced the curtain wall without exceeding it. The tower, of the type said "open at the gorge", protrudes from this alignment. The gate was closed by leaves with a portcullis in front. Two arrow slits exist above and another on each return face to protect the curtain. The coats of arms of the town, drawn in 1817 by the astronomer Vidal, have been inlaid above the opening.
