The church dates to the first third of the 12th century. It had the form of a parallelogram and the type of the primitive cella. In 1377, the English devastated the castle and the town. The church was restored in the early 15th century and then took the form of a Latin cross by the addition of two chapels. Its portal was set into a covered porch. In the 17th century, the windows and the oculus of the chevet were blocked to allow the installation of a reredos. The interior was entirely repainted. A sacristy was installed in the north-east corner of the chevet in 1823. In 1922, the commune carried out major urgent works: demolition of the bell tower and its reconstruction identically; western geminated arcade removed; removal of the terraces that lined the gap between the vault and the roof; removal of the roof structure, corbels and cornice crowning the church walls; raising of the walls and gables; replacement of the cornice and corbels; construction of wooden roof structure over the whole; roofing in Allassac tiles.
