The present belfry occupies one of the towers of the former enclosure of the monastic quarter. The arrow slits that pierce its wall can be dated to the 13th century. This tower existed in 1456. It seems that in the Middle Ages one of the enclosure towers of the Benedictine priory was assigned for watchtower use by the inhabitants. The clock was probably installed there in 1480, attested with certainty in 1487. Under the Revolution or the Empire, the clock was installed in the bell tower of the former priory church which had become the parish church. In 1838, it was decided to return to the previous situation. The architect Vollet was commissioned to rebuild the campanile, the work of which continued until 1842.
