The castle belonged in the 13th and 14th centuries to the first family of La Palisse, then in the 15th century to the family of Chabannes. In 1461, construction of the chapel on an older building (12th-13th century), with reuse of the curtain wall and tower of an old rampart. The large Renaissance dwelling with brick facing links the chapel and the original castle; its portal, also of Renaissance style, is a 19th-century pastiche. The feudal castle, remodelled in the 19th century, has retained three of its towers as well as the curtain walls connecting them to the west and north. The ramparts, from the first half of the 13th century, were completed in the 14th century. Inside, the ground floor salon has retained a very fine coffered ceiling with square coffers, each inscribed in a lozenge, decorated with fleurons and vegetative scrollwork. The great salon, to the south of the preceding one, is also decorated with a coffered ceiling. On the first floor, the Tapestry room has a Renaissance ceiling formed of star-shaped coffers. The library has a French ceiling with beams painted with candelabras and foliage. About a hundred metres from the castle are found the outbuildings and former stables dating from the 16th or 17th century.
