Of the old convent of Augustinian nuns, only a few quality elements remain, including the chapel: the exterior door of classical composition, the staircase with flights on flights with twisted balusters and an interior door whose pillars with coffering would date to 1615. The history of Vals relates to the important traffic of the southern route, at the gates of Le Puy, with the passage of pilgrims and travellers who were at the origin of the leper house of Saint-Benoît, dependent on the abbey of Pébrac from 1200. The Augustinian monks of Saint-Benoît de Val participated in the establishment of the Augustinian nuns of Val around 1313. The convent gradually expanded its lands and buildings. The Burgundians invaded it in 1419. Important repairs were executed there in 1601. In 1794, the convent was sold as national property. The Jesuits settled there in 1828 and made alterations: lengthening of various buildings and construction around 1870 of the Jesuits' chapel decorated with woodwork. No element survives from the period of foundation of the convent, except perhaps the coursed vault connecting the door and staircase C up to the church reached by an underground passage. The buildings, forming a somewhat confused maze, are discernible from the 17th century. Lengthening of the buildings around 1650, then 1700 and in 1781, last construction towards the gatehouse, connecting the church to the convent. The church, former chapel of the convent, is an authentic testimony to 17th-century architecture. Until the Revolution, the chapel comprised an upper storey entirely laid out in cells for the nuns. The choir was on the gallery storey, behind it. The bell tower, struck by lightning in the 18th century, was replaced. The nave comprises bays and a choir with a straight chevet. The first bay serving as entrance is situated beneath the gallery, supported by four arcatures on pillars. A slightly recessed arch forms the triumphal arch on pillars and Doric entablatures. The choir is beneath barrel vaults, decorated with a retable with a triangular pediment presumably from the 18th century. This is surrounded by two doors with voussure impressed at their keystone with a winged cherub's head.
