In 1221, the bishop of Le Puy gave to Saint Dominic the church of Saint-Laurent and the neighbouring hospital. In 1345, a large part of the convent of Le Puy burned. In 1374, the Polignac family gave to the Friar Preachers an annual and perpetual rent for the reconstruction of the sacristy, the chapter house and the bell tower. The chapter house was built by Jean Gras, a religious, almost at his own expense, and follows the monastic tradition of chapter houses opening onto the cloister and close to the church. It comprises a nave of two bays with aisles whose bays correspond to those of the nave. The apse, pentagonal on both faces, is covered with a terraced roof. Trefoil tracery in the high windows. Diamond-shaped frescoes still mark the rib vault crossing on four bays, the south bay having been remade in 1930. Traces of frescoes from the 14th-15th century comprising twenty paintings damaged during the Wars of Religion.
