L'édifice dut servir d'église paroissiale jusqu'en 1309, date à laquelle il fut transformé en collégiale par l'évêque du Puy pour honorer les cendres de Saint-Marcellin qui y avaient été transportées en 890. En 1777, les chanoines demandent la démolition de ce qui devait être le déambulatoire et autres piliers. En 1657, construction du clocher actuel.
