Today reduced to the state of ruins, the castle was an important stronghold in the medieval period, and was in the 13th century one of the principal residences of the Dauphins of Auvergne. The heraldic register of Guillaume Revel restores the elevation of the castle in the 15th century. Many vestiges of fortifications are still visible on the ground. The site is characteristic of the evolution of civil and military architecture of this period, combining the market village with the castle. Of very crude character, the church, former chapel of the castle, dates from the 12th century and comprises a single nave of two rectangular bays followed by a square choir. Nave and choir are barrel vaulted. Flat chevet with triple blind arcature. The openings were enlarged in the 18th century. The cylindrical clock tower was built in 1745.
