Historique
Edifice roman qui paraît remonter partiellement au début du 11e siècle, modifié et agrandi aux 15e et 19e siècles. Au 13e siècle, les moines de la Chaise-Dieu installent un prieuré en ces lieux. La date de 1207, inscrite sur le massif séparatif nord du transept et du choeur, indique très certainement l'achèvement de la construction romane, à la suite de cette prise de possession. La seigneurie effective et la justice du bourg étaient aux mains du prieur, nommé par l'abbé de la Chaise-Dieu. Le bourg fut fortifié vraisemblablement par ordonnance de Charles V, au 14e siècle. La tour de défense flanquant le bras nord du transept doit remonter à cette époque. History
Romanesque building which appears to date in part from the beginning of the 11th century, modified and enlarged in the 15th and 19th centuries. In the 13th century, the monks of la Chaise-Dieu establish a priory in these places. The date of 1207, inscribed on the northern dividing mass of the transept and the choir, indicates very certainly the completion of the Romanesque construction, following this taking of possession. The effective lordship and the justice of the town were in the hands of the prior, appointed by the abbot of la Chaise-Dieu. The town was fortified very probably by ordinance of Charles V, in the 14th century. The defensive tower flanking the north arm of the transept must date from this period. Jacques de Saint-Nectaire, abbot of la Chaise-Dieu from 1491 to 1518, constructed the present choir of flamboyant style, which came to replace the former Romanesque choir probably semicircular.
