History

Cross of the 16th century, or beginning of the 17th, which would have been felled at the Revolution, then repaired and replaced in the 19th century. It is formed of a cubic pedestal, surmounted by a plinth whose base is cubic and whose upper part is octagonal, prismatic mouldings allowing the passage from one form to the other. In this plinth is set the cubic base of the shaft buttressed by four small projecting buttresses. Cut angles allow passage from the square base to the octagon then to the cylindrical shaft bearing the cross. The cross has its arms and its upper shaft cylindrical terminated by a round projecting swelling ornamented with cut and curled foliage whose extremity is decorated, in its centre, with a round flower with flattened petals. The crossing is surrounded by a pierced polylobed nimbus of elegant design. At the centre of this nimbus are sculptured: Christ on the cross; a Pietà. On the north side, under one of the arms of the cross, sculptured directly on the upper part of the shaft, stands out in relief a shield bearing an inscription of hermetic and symbolic character treated in heraldic manner. The character of this shield whose figures are also found employed in a sense inverse to that of this one in other inscriptions, suggests that the donor must have belonged to a sect or a merchants' confraternity.
