Bon exemple d'architecture romane d'Auvergne, l'église conserve des éléments du 10e siècle dans la travée droite du choeur, du 12e siècle (nef, collatéraux, choeur) , du 13e siècle (arcs d'allègement des murs de la travée droite du choeur) et de 1818 (clocher porche). Les colonnes portent des décors sculptés aux corbeilles (végétaux, animaux, personnages). Chapiteaux historiés (Saint-Michel enfonçant sa lance dans la gueule du dragon, le Christ en croix entouré d'une sainte femme et d'un aigle, damnés au milieu des flammes de l'enfer...) , illustrant l'imagerie habituelle de la sculpture auvergnate. £L'église devait déjà exister en 950. Avant 1789, la localité était le siège d'un prieuré et d'une cure relevant de l'archiprêtré d'Ardes, dont le titulaire était le curé de Saint-Alyre-ès-Montagnes. La cure était de l'élection d'Issoire.

A fine example of Romanesque architecture of Auvergne, the church preserves elements from the 10th century in the straight bay of the choir, from the 12th century (nave, aisles, choir), from the 13th century (relieving arches of the walls of the straight bay of the choir) and from 1818 (porch tower). The columns bear sculptured decoration on the corbels (plants, animals, figures).
