La commanderie des chevaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem, dont devaient probablement faire partie ces bâtiments, appartint sans doute primitivement aux Templiers. La commanderie de Chanonat était affectée à des chevaliers de Malte servants d'armes, avant 1789. Les éléments architecturaux sont situés au côté sud-ouest d'une tourelle d'escalier à huit pas qui fait saillie sur la façade. Au rez-de-chaussée, l'encadrement rectangulaire de la porte est mouluré de filets et grains d'orge reposant sur des bases également moulurées. Cet encadrement est complété par des pilastres toscans ornés vers leur centre d'un médaillon renfermant une corolle ouverte, et surmontés de chapiteaux ioniques dont les volutes sont remplacées par une tête d'angelot aux ailes ouvertes. Un fronton dont l'encadrement est curviligne et dont le couronnement consiste en une coquille aux bords décorés d'enroulements, surmonte la corniche. Ce fronton est sculpté, en bas-relief, d'un écu armorié, flanqué de deux lions en supports et surmonté d'un cimier au-dessus duquel est également une tête de lion. Le corps de logis qui comporte cette tourelle possède d'intéressants encadrements.

History
The commandery of the knights of Saint-Jean de Jérusalem, of which these buildings were no doubt probably to be part, probably belonged originally to the Templars. The commandery of Chanonat was assigned to knights of Malta serving in arms, before 1789. The architectural elements are situated on the south-west side of a staircase turret of eight steps which projects on the façade. On the ground floor, the rectangular framing of the door is moulded with fillet and barley-corn ornamentation resting on bases also moulded. This framing is completed by Tuscan pilasters ornamented towards their centre with a medallion containing an open corolla, and surmounted by Ionic capitals whose volutes are replaced by a cherub head with open wings. A pediment whose framing is curvilinear and whose crowning consists of a shell with borders decorated with scrollwork, surmounts the cornice. This pediment is sculpted, in bas-relief, with a heraldic shield, flanked by two lions in supports and surmounted by a crest above which is also a lion head. The main dwelling which includes this turret possesses interesting framing.
