The original castle was erected partly in the 10th century, on a Roman road, in replacement of a primitive wooden castle, burned by the Normans. The castle played an important role during the Revolution and subsequently in the context of the resistance. The building presents a body of building in an L-shape, one of the wings being flanked by four round towers. The other wing comprises a square tower. Staircases, one at an angle and the other spiral, lead to the first floor. In the rooms, old parquet floors. In the great hall, the ceiling was painted at the beginning of the 17th century. The rooms retain panelling of the same period. The whole is, on two sides, surrounded by terraces constructed in the 17th century. The outbuildings were built around the forecourt.
