Le premier château fut construit à la fin du 10e siècle ou au début du siècle suivant par Riwallon le Vicaire ou le Vicomte, l'un des chevaliers du duc Geoffroi Ier ; il occupait alors l'emplacement de l'église Sainte-Croix actuelle. Un deuxième château fut édifié au milieu du 11e siècle par son fils Robert Ier sur le site actuel. Il se composait d'un simple donjon et fut remplacé, au début du 13e siècle, par une forteresse beaucoup plus étendue, de forme triangulaire. Il en reste quelques courtines et la base de la tour au Véel. Cette forteresse fut elle-même reconstruite sur le même plan au 14e et au 15e siècles.

History
The first castle was built at the end of the 10th century or at the beginning of the following century by Riwallon the Vicar or the Viscount, one of the knights of Duke Geoffroi I; it occupied the location of the present Sainte-Croix church. A second castle was built in the middle of the 11th century by his son Robert I on the present site. It consisted of a simple keep and was replaced, at the beginning of the 13th century, by a much more extensive fortress of triangular form. A few curtain walls and the base of the Véel tower remain from it. This fortress was itself rebuilt on the same plan in the 14th and 15th centuries.
