History
This building forms part of the second expansion of the town of Saint-Malo, between 1716 and 1725. At this location stood the buildings where Saint-Malo navigators and ship-owners resided. Most of the houses were built on the designs of engineer Garangeau. The hotel at no. 1 presents a façade of ashlar granite, topped with high slate roofs surmounted by massive chimney stacks. It first belonged to the Beaugeard family. Robert Surcouf purchased the hotel and lived there for a long time. One of the chimney heads of the hotel is decorated with a small sundial which he is said to have made.
