Historique
Ce théâtre, construit par Jean-Marie Laloy, a été inauguré en 1888. Il est désaffecté depuis 1975. C'est un édifice de plan rectangulaire, de moyenne importance (400 à 500 places) , mais témoignant d'un souci monumental : la façade, située dans l'alignement des maisons voisines, s'en distingue par son aspect imposant et son architecture très Beaux-Arts, avec bossage, chapiteaux corinthiens, pilastres, frises, fronton-pignon cintré à tympan orné. Le décor intérieur trahit ce souci de faire une architecture malgré des moyens modestes : il s'inspire du décor classique des théâtres de l'époque (bleu foncé, rouge grenat, or) , mais en traitant le tout presque exclusivement en peintures, et sans grandes scènes mythologiques et allégoriques. De ce point de vue, c'est un véritable tour de force, et une incontestable réussite.

History
This theatre, built by Jean-Marie Laloy, was inaugurated in 1888. It has been disused since 1975. It is a building of rectangular plan, of medium importance (400 to 500 seats), but showing a concern for monumentality: the façade, situated in line with neighbouring houses, distinguishes itself from them by its imposing appearance and its very Beaux-Arts architecture, with rustication, Corinthian capitals, pilasters, friezes, curved pediment-gable with ornamented tympanum. The interior decoration reveals this concern to create impressive architecture despite modest means: it is inspired by the classical decoration of theatres of the period (dark blue, garnet red, gold), but treating it almost exclusively in paintings, and without great mythological and allegorical scenes. From this point of view, it is a genuine tour de force, and an undeniable success.
