Historique

History
Placed at the entrance to Morlaix bay, the Taurus island was of capital strategic importance for its defence. A first château built in 1521 was rapidly destroyed by the English. Rebuilt from 1542, it has since undergone numerous modifications: reconstruction of the keep (French tower) in 1614, restoration of the keep, demolition, reconstruction and enlargement of the old fort from 1689 to 1692 under the direction of Vauban and Garengeau, successive enlargements at the end of the 17th century and at the beginning of the following century, always under the direction of the two engineers, etc. Moreover, the upper parts of the edifice were modified several times to follow the progress of artillery and today it has lost its crenellated crown. Despite these modifications, it is a major edifice in the history of military construction.
