History

From the 13th century there existed in Tréguier a hôtel-dieu which Saint-Yves (1253-1303) frequented. The oldest part that remains is the present parlour, against which was built, in the second half of the 15th century, the chapel Sainte-Marie-Madeleine. The Hôtel-Dieu was restored by Augustinian nuns who came from Quimper in 1654. After the restoration of the chapel and the parlour (witnesses to the medieval hospital, respectively of the 14th and 15th centuries), the nuns built in 1662-1663 the great main building (cloister, refectory, dormitories, novitiate...) and, from 1669 onwards, the new hospital (men's ward in 1672, women's ward in 1695), demolished in 1852 to make way for the new Hôtel-Dieu, built between 1853 and 1856. In 1823 a wing perpendicular to the 17th-century main building was built and intended for a boarding school for young girls. In 1896, the house Saint-Yves (rest home for priests) was built, in the extension of the hospital. A gallery was added in 1935 to make the connection between the cloister and the hospital. Abandoned in 1990, this building became a hotel restaurant.
