History

Monument of the 15th century which preserves intact, inside, its decoration of carved wood. The church owes its name to an abbot who lived in the 6th century. It is composed of a nave, two transepts, two aisles, and an apse with three equal sides. The three windows of the apse are adorned with fleurs-de-lis mullions. The middle one preserves stained-glass windows of the 16th century. All the windows represent scenes from the life of Saint-Envel and his legend. The building is covered with a wooden vault borne by a cornice carved with ornaments, mascaron heads and figures. A frieze runs all along the vault ribs. At the intersection of the vaults of the nave and transept, moulded arches are ornamented with pendentives representing twelve angels bursting from the sky. They are supported, at the base, at the four angles of the transept, by statues of the four Evangelists life-size and come up against, at their summit, a pendentive representing the Trinity. Another pendentive represents Christ. The gallery reserved for the lords of Coatannos is made of an old rood screen resting on four sculptured columns adorned with various foliage. Between the columns, panels fill the gaps in the base.
