Historique

History
This chapel situated in the village of Saint-Carré, distant 5 km from the town of Lanvellec, replaces an old friary chapel mentioned from the 12th century and ruined during the Wars of the League. Its reconstruction was decided following three apparitions of the Virgin to Jean Bizien, a peasant of Lanvellec, around 1660. It is a building of the very end of the 17th century (1695-1697), in the form of a Latin cross oriented with a flat chevet, composed of a simple nave, a transept and a choir extended by a sacristy. The porch tower and part of the nave, partially destroyed by lightning in 1875, are rebuilt three years later. The door opening at the base of the bell tower is surmounted by a loggia sheltering a statue of the Virgin, object of a pardon at Whitsunday. The interior presents a décor of the 18th century (retable, statues...) as well as a coffered vault and tie beams painted in 1890. The building is surrounded by a churchyard whose wattle-enclosed close is marked by a gateway and two crosses. Outside the enclosure is found a devotional fountain built in 1700, to which healing power from rickets, depression and languor was attributed.
