The church was built during the Revolution (first stone laid in 1790) by Louis Le Masson, architect and engineer of the Ponts et Chaussées, a student of Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. It has an elliptical plan surmounted by a dome. In 1868, an enlargement campaign opened one of the two great sides of the church to accommodate the increase in population; this enlargement modified the orientation of the church and led to the construction of the entrance portico (portico formed of four Ionic columns surmounted by an entablature and a triangular pediment).
