"L'église de Briis-sous-Forge a été fondée par les moines de l'abbaye de Saint-Denis. L'édifice actuel, probablement élevé à l'emplacement d'une construction plus ancienne, remonte aux XIIème et XIIIème siècles et marque la transition entre roman et gothique. Mais depuis sa construction, l'église Saint-Denis de Briis-sous-Forge a subi de nombreuses modifications. Le clocher et le chœur présentent les parties les plus anciennes. Le clocher est construit en dehors de l'église. De forme carrée, sa hauteur est de 28,5 mètres ; il se termine par quatre pignons avec un toit à double bâtière. Les anciennes chapelles au nord du chœur, couvertes de croisées d'ogive, présentent des traces d'une ancienne peinture murale où l'on distingue encore un personnage priant. La nef, simple, a été très remaniée, voire en partie reconstruite au XVIIème siècle, époque à laquelle, sous l'impulsion du seigneur local, l'église passe brièvement au culte protestant. La nef est encore reprise par la suite notamment durant le deuxième quart du XIXème siècle. Le porche de la façade sud abrite un portail présentant une arcade romane avec une archivolte sculptée en dent de scie et des chapiteaux ornés de masques. "

History
The church of Briis-sous-Forge was founded by the monks of the abbey of Saint-Denis. The present building, probably erected on the site of an earlier construction, dates to the 12th and 13th centuries and marks the transition between Romanesque and Gothic. But since its construction, the church of Saint-Denis of Briis-sous-Forge has undergone many modifications. The bell tower and the choir present the oldest parts. The bell tower is built outside the church. Square in form, its height is 28.5 metres; it ends with four gables with a double-slope roof. The former chapels to the north of the choir, covered with rib vaults, present traces of former wall painting where one can still make out a praying figure. The nave, simple, was greatly modified, even partly rebuilt in the 17th century, a period during which, under the impulse of the local lord, the church briefly passed to Protestant worship. The nave was subsequently taken up again, notably during the second quarter of the 19th century. The porch of the south façade houses a portal presenting a round arch with an archivolt sculpted with tooth ornament and capitals decorated with masks.
