Créée sur les rives de la Bièvre en 1662 par Colbert, la manufacture des Gobelins regroupe aujourd'hui trois établissements distincts : la manufacture de tapisserie de haute lisse des Gobelins, la manufacture de tapis de la Savonnerie et la manufacture de tapisseries de basse lisse de Beauvais. La chapelle, construite par Jacques V Gabriel, date de 1723 (actuellement désaffectée). En 1870, de nouvelles constructions sont réalisées par l'architecte François Chabrol et, après l'incendie provoqué par les Communards, les architectes Camille-Jean Formigé et Léon Jaussely réalisent en 1912 le bâtiment du musée qui borde l'avenue. Les cariatides en façade de cet édifice sont dues à Jean-Antoine Injalbert, le haut-relief qui les surmonte étant signé de Paul Landowski. L'ensemble du site, lié aux politiques artistiques et économiques de Louis XIV, a conservé son calme et sa cohérence interne. Created on the banks of the Bièvre in 1662 by Colbert, the Gobelins manufactory today brings together three distinct establishments: the high-warp tapestry manufacture of the Gobelins, the carpet manufacture of the Savonnerie and the low-warp tapestry manufacture of Beauvais. The chapel, built by Jacques V Gabriel, dates from 1723 (currently disused). In 1870, new buildings are constructed by the architect François Chabrol and, after the fire caused by the Communards, the architects Camille-Jean Formigé and Léon Jaussely constructed in 1912 the museum building which borders the avenue. The caryatids on the façade of this building are due to Jean-Antoine Injalbert, the high-relief which surmounts them being signed by Paul Landowski. The entire site, linked to the artistic and economic policies of Louis XIV, has preserved its calm and its internal coherence. The statue of Colbert is due to Jean-Paul Aube (1894) and that of Charles Le Brun, first director of the manufactory from 1663 to 1690, to Henri Cordier (1904).
